Thoughts on Creativity, Evolution, and Jiu-Jitsu

How does creativity and evolution tie together?

What really sets apart good and great, black belt and brown belt is creativity. Once you reach the higher levels, your jiujitsu starts to evolve not by studying moves and replicating what you see other people do. Progress comes at the higher levels when you start inventing your own jiujitsu. And a big part of that creativity is wholeness: when the pieces of the puzzle start to come together, you start to see more and more of the whole picture. Seeing the wholeness and being creative is what unlocks the secret of beautiful and fun jiujitsu.

The ingredients to evolution being creativity and wholeness is something you can see both on and off the mat.

You start taking one move from a position and see how you can use it in a different position and bring a bunch of different pieces together in a creative way that is unique to you and your own jiujitsu journey.

Whole + creative = evolution.

Jiujitsu is an example of where going to the next belt signifies that you are evolving in your own game by integrating different moves together: linking sequences, translating concepts in multiple scenarios, setting up chains of offense and defense. But the way you ultimately progress to higher levels is by taking risks, being willing to fail, and in responding to those risks and integrating multiple sequences and theories, you are creative.
